ARLINGTON, Texas -- Cole Hamels delivered his best performance yet for the Texas Rangers, striking out 10 in eight innings Friday night during a 4-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Star outfielder Adam Jones started for the Orioles, a day after he ran into a wall and was forced to leave, but Baltimore lost for the eighth time in nine games.
Hamels (2-1) gave up one run and two hits. Acquired from Philadelphia before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the three-time All-Star won for the first time at home after a pair of no-decisions.
The left-hander had pitched a no-hitter in his final start for the Phillies.
Solo home runs by Shin-Soo Choo and Chris Gimenez backed Hamels.
Kevin Gausman (2-6) allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. He has made 11 starts this season, beginning in late June, with one win (see full recap).
BoSox snap Mets' streak on inside-the-park homer
NEW YORK -- Blake Swihart hit an inside-the-park home run in the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox stopped the New York Mets' seven-game winning streak, holding on for a 6-4 victory Friday night.
MLB
The Red Sox, visiting the Mets for the first time since 2001, scored three times in the 10th. Swihart led off with a drive that appeared to clear the center field wall and bounce back into play, but the ball was ruled in play.
The NL East-leading Mets rallied in the bottom half when reliever Junichi Tazawa walked four straight batters with two outs to force home a run. Craig Breslow replaced Tazawa and retired Yoenis Cespedes on a fly ball for his first save.
Tommy Layne (1-1) got the win. Carlos Torre (5-6) took the loss.
Mets ace Matt Harvey pitched six shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out eight (see full recap).
