NEW YORK -- In one of the classic games of their long and illustrious rivalry, the Boston Red Sox finally outlasted the New York Yankees 6-5 in 19 innings early Saturday when the game-ending double play was turned at 2:13 a.m.
In the first meeting of the year between the teams, Boston at last went ahead for good on a sacrifice fly by Mookie Betts. Xander Bogaerts scored the decisive run after reaching on his fourth hit in extra innings.
Chase Headley and Mark Teixeira hit tying home runs for the Yankees in an early-season epic interrupted by a power outage for 16 minutes in the 12th. That's why the official time of game was 6 hours, 49 minutes -- even though it took more than 7 hours to complete.
The teams get little chance to rest, too. They're back at it for the middle game of the series Saturday at 1:05 p.m (see full recap).
Braves top Mets to remain unbeaten
ATLANTA -- Phil Gosselin had a tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth inning, Cameron Maybin homered and the Atlanta Braves won their home opener with a 5-3 victory over the sloppy New York Mets on Friday night.
Atlanta recovered after starting pitcher Eric Stults blew a three-run lead in a game delayed more than an hour by rain at the start.
The Braves, despite a major roster overhaul that pointed to a rebuilding year in Atlanta, are 4-0 to begin the season for the first time since they were 7-0 in 1994.
MLB
Chris Johnson led off the eighth with a double off Rafael Montero (0-1), the fourth New York pitcher, and was replaced by pinch-runner Jace Peterson.
As third baseman David Wright charged toward the infield grass to pick up Andrelton Simmons' grounder, Peterson was able to run behind Wright, avoid his tag attempt and safely reach third.
Simmons made it to second when nobody covered the bag, and both runners scored on Gosselin's single to make it 5-3.
Jim Johnson (1-0) gave up one hit and struck out the side in the eighth (see full recap).
Marlins outslug Rays in extras
MIAMI -- Christian Yelich drove in three runs, including a game-ending RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Miami Marlins to their first win, 10-9 over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.
Giancarlo Stanton also had three RBIs and Michael Morse drove in two for the Marlins, who led 8-1 before the Rays scored seven runs in the seventh to tie it.
Miami, which beat Tampa Bay for the fifth consecutive time, scored just three runs in its first three games before Friday's outburst to avoid a franchise-worst 0-4 start.
Dee Gordon doubled down the right-field line with one out against Brad Boxberger (0-1) before Yelich drove a ground ball through the left side, scoring Gordon without a throw home.
Bryan Morris (1-0) pitched one inning to earn the victory.
David DeJesus had a three-run triple and Kevin Kiermaier hit his second home run for the Rays (see full recap).
