ST. LOUISPhillies reliever Jose Contreras was unavailable for Wednesday nights game against the Cardinals and was placed on the disabled list Thursday morning.

His elbow is sore, manager Charlie Manuel told CSNPhilly.com.The Phillies on Thursday called up lefthander Juan Perez from Triple A Lehigh Valley.
Contreras spent a month on the disabled list earlier this season with an elbow strain (officially it's being called a forearm strain). He has struggled to regain velocity on his fastball since coming back and has allowed six runs in his last 2 23 innings.

Contreras was not needed Wednesday night because Cliff Lee pitched a complete game in shutting out St. Louis, 4-0.In 28 games this season, the 32-year-old Perez is 0-3 with a 3.52 ERA and four saves. He has struck out 41 in 30 13 innings and held lefties to a .184 average. In 24 career major league appearances, all with the Pirates from 2006-07, Perez is 0-1 with a 5.17 ERA.
