The Phillies continue to fill out their front office in an intriguing, unconventional way.
Andy Galdi has been hired as the Phils' director of baseball research and development. The 30-year-old was a baseball ops intern with the Mets in 2009, but now, he isn't coming from another front office or some sort of job within baseball — he's coming from Google.
Galdi for the last three years worked at Google as a quantitative analyst for YouTube. Prior to that, he spent two years in the NBA Commissioner's Office as a statistical analyst. His focus there was analyzing referees and potential rule changes.
The Phillies' front office under president Andy MacPhail and GM Matt Klentak is a mixture of baseball men like Pat Gillick, Scott Proefrock, Dallas Green, Jorge Velandia and Ed Wade, but also younger execs with analytics experiences such as Galdi, assistant general manager Ned Rice, director of baseball operations Scott Freedman and 23-year-old research and development analyst Lewis Pollis.
