KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones left the game against the Royals after running into the wall while tracking down a fly ball in the first inning Thursday.

The All-Star had a bead on the fly by Ben Zobrist, but it fell just out of Jones's reach and he ran hard into the wall. Jones was knocked off his feet and remained down as Zobrist headed to second base, and left fielder Steve Pearce motioned for trainers.

After a few moments, Jones stood up and remained in the game. He was replaced by Paul Janish in the third when his place in the batting order came up.

There was no immediate word on the nature or severity of his injury.

Cubs: Fernando Rodney acquired for cash
CHICAGO -- The playoff-contending Chicago Cubs have acquired struggling reliever Fernando Rodney from the Seattle Mariners for cash.

The trade was announced Thursday.

The 38-year-old Rodney had been designated for assignment by Seattle last Sunday.

Rodney was 5-5 and had gone 16 for 22 in save chances this season. The right-hander had a 5.68 ERA in 54 games.

Rodney was an AL All-Star closer last year when he posted a Mariners-record 48 saves.

Rays: Desmond Jennings to 15-day DL
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays have put outfielder Desmond Jennings on the 15-day disabled with a bruised left knee and recalled outfielder Joey Butler from Triple-A Durham.

The moves were announced before Thursday night's game against Minnesota.

Jennings bruised the knee sliding last weekend at Oakland. The injury forced him to leave Tuesday night's game with the Twins after three innings.

Jennings played in 10 games after missing 96 earlier this season due to left knee bursitis that required surgery.

Rays: James Loney drops appeal of suspension
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Rays first baseman James Loney has dropped his appeal of a one-game suspension.

The lefty-hitting Loney decided to serve his suspension in Thursday night's game against Minnesota. The Twins' starting pitcher is left-hander Tommy Milone.

Loney played Tuesday and Wednesday after appealing the suspension and an undisclosed fine announced by Major League Baseball on Tuesday. He was penalized for making contact with umpire Paul Nauert after striking out and being ejected in Saturday's game at Oakland.
