ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals have signed free-agent shortstop Ruben Tejada to a one-year, $1.5 million guaranteed contract.
Tejada hit .261 with 23 doubles, three homers and 28 RBIs with the New York Mets last year. His season ended when the Los Angeles Dodgers' Chase Utley broke Tejada's right leg with a takeout slide in the NL Division Series.
Tejada signed with the Mets in 2006 and spent parts of six big league seasons in New York. But after the Mets offered him a contract on Dec. 2, they signed free-agent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and acquired second baseman Neil Walker from Pittsburgh.
With Wilmer Flores also on the roster, Tejada's future with the team became uncertain and he was released on Wednesday.
The Cardinals' roster now stands at 40 players.
Nationals to shut down Arroyo, try rehab on injured shoulder
VIERA, Fla. -- The Washington Nationals will rest Bronson Arroyo for up to two weeks before beginning rehab on his injured right shoulder.
General manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement on Saturday. He said Arroyo will avoid any throwing or shoulder work for seven days to two weeks. He'll then begin a shoulder strengthening program, followed by a throwing program.

The 39-year-old Arroyo is attempting a comeback after missing all of 2015 following Tommy John surgery and surgery to repair a partly torn rotator cuff. He has not pitched in the majors since June 14, 2014.
Arroyo, a 2006 All-Star with the Cincinnati Reds, signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals in January. The 15-year veteran right-hander has a 145-131 career record with a 4.19 ERA (see full story).
