ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- New York Mets third baseman David Wright is ready to start a minor league rehab assignment as he works to come back from spinal stenosis.

The Mets announced before Sunday's game at Tampa Bay that Wright will be the designated hitter Monday night for Class A St. Lucie. He is scheduled to play in the field Tuesday.

Wright has played in just eight games this season.

There has been no timetable announced for when Wright could rejoin the Mets.

Marlins: Fernandez out with bicep tendon strain
ATLANTA -- Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has a strained right bicep tendon and is likely headed for the disabled list.

Manager Dan Jennings says Fernandez had an MRI on Saturday. He says there is no timetable for his return, but he did not rule out having him back this season.

Jennings says "We won't put him out there until we know he is 100 percent. There is no need to push it or rush it."

Fernandez threw 76 pitches over five innings against the Braves on Friday night and complained of shoulder stiffness on Saturday. He returned to Miami and was examined by Dr. Dan Kaplan.

The 2013 NL Rookie of the Year is 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in seven starts this year. He underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2014.

Giants: Aoki hit in head by pitch
CHICAGO -- Nori Aoki has left San Francisco's game against the Chicago Cubs after he was hit by a pitch in the third inning.

Aoki was hit on his batting helmet by a 92 mph fastball from Jake Arrieta. Aoki hit the ground immediately, and a Giants trainer came running out of the dugout to tend to the Japanese outfielder.

Aoki was able to walk off the field under his own power Sunday and was replaced in the lineup by Angel Pagan.

Nationals: Span has no timetable for return
WASHINGTON -- Injured Nationals center fielder Denard Span won't accompany the team on its upcoming 10-day road trip and there's no timetable for his return.

Span has been on the disabled list since July 10 with tightness in his back. He recently took batting practice and fielded fly balls but didn't feel as good the next day and needed some rest.

Span said he was better Sunday but "but I'm not over the hump yet. The pain kind of comes and goes. Something just isn't cooperating."

Anthony Rendon, Stephen Strasburg, Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth have all returned to Washington's active roster in the last 16 days, leaving Span as the only key piece missing from the lineup.

He has played in all but 24 games the last two years for the Nationals but had sports hernia surgery in December and abdominal surgery in March. The 31-year-old free agent-to-be knows teams are keeping an eye on his health.

Blue Jays; Encarnacion out with sore finger
NEW YORK -- Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion is out of the lineup against the New York Yankees because of a tender finger on his left hand.

Encarnacion's middle finger has been bothering him for a while, and he aggravated it on a swing Saturday. The first baseman and designated hitter was rested Sunday as second-place Toronto tried for a three-game sweep of the AL East leaders.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons hopes Encarnacion will feel better after the team's off day Monday.

Encarnacion was batting .251 with 21 homers and 64 RBIs. He had reached base safely in 16 consecutive games, and is 5 for 10 with a home run against Masahiro Tanaka, the scheduled Yankees starter.

Justin Smoak was at first base for Toronto, with Chris Colabello the DH.

In other news, the Blue Jays optioned reserve infielder Munenori Kawasaki to Triple-A Buffalo to open a roster spot for utility infielder Cliff Pennington, acquired Saturday in a trade with Arizona.

Pennington was in uniform and available off the bench.
