MLB Notes: Shoulder stiffness sends Jose Fernandez home

ATLANTA -- Marlins ace Jose Fernandez headed back to Miami on Saturday to be examined by a doctor after feeling stiffness in his right shoulder following Friday night's outing against the Atlanta Braves.

Fernandez is 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in six starts this season since returning from Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow.

"We want to get him seen," manager Dan Jennings said. "He's a guy who is coming off 14 months of rehab from Tommy John. As we do with any pitcher, we're going to make sure before we run him out there."

Fernandez complained of shoulder stiffness when he arrived in the clubhouse Saturday, and the team sent him home to see Dr. Dan Kaplan (see full story).

Nationals: Span has injury setback; Uggla to DL
WASHINGTON -- Nationals center fielder Denard Span has experienced a setback in his rehabilitation from a back injury that will delay his return from the disabled list.

Span, sidelined since July 7, had been hitting, running and working in the outfield recently. He felt good at first, but manager Matt Williams said Saturday that Span's back stopped getting better.

Williams said Span will stay with the team in Washington for the next few days and then go to Florida early next week for more rehab work.

In other news, the Nationals placed backup second baseman Dan Uggla on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms.

The move opened a roster spot for right-hander Stephen Strasburg, who came off the DL to start Saturday night against Colorado. He had been sidelined with an oblique injury.

Braves: Bourn happy to be back with Atlana
ATLANTA -- On Alumni Weekend, the Braves are welcoming a former player back into their clubhouse.

With former Braves participating in an alumni softball game on the Turner Field infield Saturday, Michael Bourn met with the media the day after being traded with Nick Swisher from the Indians to the Braves.

"I came in at about this time (in 2011), right around the trade deadline," Bourn said. "I'm happy to be here. I liked my time here. We had a good atmosphere, good clubhouse."

Bourn spent one and a half seasons with the Braves, hitting .275 with 64 steals in 208 games.

He was an All-Star in 2012 before signing a four-year deal as a free agent with the Indians in the offseason. Friday, the Braves sent third baseman Chris Johnson to the Indians for Bourn and Swisher (see full story).

Tigers: Iglesias OK with role in dugout scrap
DETROIT -- A day after he was involved in a dugout scrap with a teammate, Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias said he was fine with his role in the altercation.

"I just go by instincts, and my instincts tell me to do that," he said. "I'm OK with it."

Iglesias shoved Tigers catcher James McCann and threw his glove at him during a 7-2 loss to Boston on Friday night. Iglesias spoke to reporters Saturday for the first time since the dustup.

"It wasn't a big deal," Iglesias said. "Things happen. It is what it is. When you deal (with) something for 162 games, everybody's not going to be on the same page. But it's over. It was yesterday, so we've just got to play better and win today."

A replay showed McCann approaching Iglesias in the dugout. Iglesias shoved McCann in the chest before being restrained by third baseman Nick Castellanos. Then the All-Star shortstop threw his glove (see full story).
