All of Phillies' signings and trades since Dave Dombrowski took over

Dave Dombrowski has been a busy fella’ since officially taking over the Phillies’ baseball operations on December 11. In the seven weeks since, the Phillies have agreed to contracts with 14 players and made five trades.

Major-league deals

  • C J.T. Realmuto — 5 years, $115.5M
  • SS Didi Gregorius — 2 years, $28M*
  • RHP Archie Bradley — 1 year, $6M
  • RHP Chase Anderson — 1 year, $4M*
  • LHP Matt Moore — 1 year, $3M

*signing not yet been announced by Phillies

These five contracts cost a combined $156.5 million. From a luxury tax perspective, they added $50.1 million to the Phillies' 2021 player payroll.

The luxury tax threshold for 2021 is $210 million. The Phillies are at approximately $199 million. The figure is calculated by MLB at season's end. A first-time offender, which the Phillies would be if they go over, is taxed 20% on every dollar over $210 million.

  • Acquired LHP Jose Alvarado from Rays (gave up LHP Garrett Cleavinger)
  • Acquired RHP Sam Coonrod from Giants for RHP Carson Ragsdale
  • Acquired SS C.J. Chatham from Red Sox for PTBNL
  • Traded SS Kyle Holder to Reds for Cash
  • Traded LHP Cole Irvin to Athletics for cash

Alvarado was a buy-low move for the Phillies. When healthy, he has plus stuff. Coonrod has a 99 mph fastball. Neither may be an answer in the Phillies' bullpen in 2021, but they'll earn less than $2 million combined.

The trades of Holder and Irvin were made to clear up 40-man roster spots. Holder was selected by the Phillies from the Yankees in December's Rule 5 draft.

Minor-league deals

  • RHP Ivan Nova
  • RHP Neftali Feliz
  • RHP Hector Rondon
  • C Christian Bethancourt
  • SS Ronald Torreyes
  • RHP Bryan Mitchell
  • RHP Michael Ynoa
  • RHP David Paulino
  • RHP Mike Adams

Lots of pitching depth here. Nova, a league-average 11-year vet with a penchant for keeping the ball on the ground, will compete for the No. 5 starter's job.

Rondon was very good from 2014-19, pitching to a 3.06 ERA with 374 strikeouts in 361 innings with the Cubs and Astros. He had seasons with 30, 29, 18 and 15 saves and spent an even bigger bulk of that time as a setup man.

Feliz is also a former late reliever who had a 2.53 ERA and 87 saves over his first six seasons, but he has not appeared in the majors since 2017.

More to come?

There are still many notable free-agent relievers out there, not A-tier guys but pitchers with experience who could help late in games: Shane Greene, Sergio Romo, Tony Watson, Jose Alvarez, Jake McGee, Yoshihisa Hirano, Yusmeiro Petit and about two dozen more.
