Another injury to a Phillies pitcher and this one definitely hurts.
Zach Eflin, who has been the Phillies’ best starting pitcher this season, was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with mid-back tightness. He was scheduled to pitch against the Dodgers Saturday. The IL stint is retroactive to May 28 (more details here).
Left-hander Cole Irvin was called up from Triple A to replace Eflin on the active roster. Irvin last pitched on Wednesday for Lehigh Valley but was pulled from his start after three innings.
While the Eflin injury hurts, Irvin’s presence will help the Phillies this weekend against a Dodgers team stacked with left-handed power. All of the Dodgers’ 1-6 hitters in Friday’s lineup are lefties.
Eflin is 5-5 with a 3.02 ERA in 11 starts this season. He joins David Robertson, Pat Neshek, Tommy Hunter, Adam Morgan, Victor Arano and Edubray Ramos on the injured list.
