More honors for the late, great Roy Halladay.
The Phillies on Tuesday announced that they will retire the No. 34 that the Hall of Fame right-hander wore in his four seasons with the club.
The retirement ceremony will take place before the May 29 game against Washington at Citizens Bank Park. That is the 10-year anniversary of Halladay’s perfect game against the Marlins in Miami. You can revisit that game here.
Halladay, who died at the age of 40 in a plane crash in November 2017, won the National League Cy Young Award in 2010, his first season with the Phillies. He finished second in the voting in 2011. Injuries began to derail his career in 2012 and he retired after the 2013 season.
Halladay was honored posthumously with a spot on the Phillies’ Wall of Fame in August 2018 and he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility last summer.
Halladay came to the Phillies in December 2009 after 12 seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. He wore No. 32 in Toronto. The Jays retired that number in Halladay’s honor on opening day 2018.
Though Halladay spent just four seasons with the Phillies, he always spoke of his time in Philadelphia as special because he was able to pitch in the postseason. In fact, he pitched just the second no-hitter in postseason history in October 2010. The Halladay family expressed its respect for the pitcher’s time in Philadelphia when it opted for him to go into the Hall of Fame with no team logo on his cap.

The Phillies have a policy of retiring only the numbers of Hall of Famers. Halladay joins Richie Ashburn (1), Steve Carlton (32), Mike Schmidt (20) and Jim Bunning (14) as having his number retired by the ballclub. Grover Cleveland Alexander and Chuck Klein are also honored as Hall of Famers by the club.
During Halladay’s retired number ceremony, the Phillies will unveil a six-foot statue of the number 34 in the third base plaza area. Fans will also receive a replica of the statue. Individual game tickets go on sale Feb. 12, according to the Phillies.
