Vincent Velasquez, Brett Oberholtzer, OFs look to impress Monday

CLEARWATER, Fla. — With Aaron Altherr back in Philadelphia to see a hand specialist about his ailing left wrist (see story), some additional opportunity in the Phillies' outfield has been created. If Altherr is to miss extended time — which is unclear as of Monday — players like Cody Asche (still out with an oblique injury) and Rule 5 pick Tyler Goeddel could get an opportunity to start.

So too could Darnell Sweeney, one of two players from the Dodgers acquired in last August's Chase Utley trade. Sweeney, a 25-year-old switch-hitter, played all three outfield positions in addition to second base and third base last season with the Phils. He hit just .176 in 85 at-bats but did show some plate discipline and hit a few long home runs.

On Monday in Bradenton, Sweeney is playing left field and Goeddel is in right field. Peter Bourjos makes his first start of the spring in center.

There will also be a battle worth watching on the mound. Vincent Velasquez starts against the Pirates and fellow fifth-starter candidate Brett Oberholtzer is set to pitch after him.

Utility infielder Andres Blanco will play in his first spring game after missing some time with a shoulder injury.

Well-rounded catching prospect Jorge Alfaro, who has looked impressive at the plate and behind it early in spring training, is the designated hitter.
