Jahlil Okafor took in his first Sixers Beach Bash on Saturday at Avalon, New Jersey, and discussed a number of topics.
One, of course, was his teammate Joel Embiid, who will miss a second straight season because of another surgery on his right foot. But Okafor said Embiid is staying positive despite the tough news.
"He's doing good," Okafor said Saturday. "I FaceTimed him [Friday] night. He's doing well. I'll probably see him tonight when I head back to Philly. He's doing well, he's in good spirits."
Okafor's NBA debut is fast approaching with training camp set to start at the end of September. Now that Embiid has been ruled out for the entire 2015-16 season, it's apparent that Okafor will be called upon to carry the load alongside Nerlens Noel in the Sixers' frontcourt.
Okafor's first impression from the Utah and Vegas summer leagues offered a good indication that he's up for the task.
"Right after summer league, I went straight to Duke," he said. "I was there for like 10 days. I was there working out and using the facilities, stuff like that."
