Kobe Bryant public memorial at Staples Center set for late February

The city of Los Angeles is planning to hold a public memorial honoring Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna Bryant, and seven others who died Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash.

The memorial will be held at the Staples Center, according to a report from the Los Angeles Times.

It's worth noting that the numeric representation of Feb. 24, 2/24, honors both Bryant's No. 24 jersey with the Lakers and Gianna Bryant's No. 2 jersey with Harbor Day School in Newport Beach, a nice touch from the city. Players in this month's All-Star Game will be wearing No. 2 and No. 24 jerseys to honor the two.

During the immediate aftermath following the accident, fans gathered at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to honor Bryant with tributes including dedicated basketballs, jerseys, flowers, and more. The Lakers held a special pre-game memorial when they returned to the Staples Center, featuring a heartfelt speech from LeBron James.

Similar tributes were paid at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, where Bryant played high school basketball before being drafted in 1996, and where his impact on the Philly basketball scene extended right here to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Marc Jackson. Jackson shared his favorite memories of growing and playing with Bryant in the wake of the accident last month.

And the basketball world at large has seen an outpouring of tributes and rememberances, from current and former players to fans around the world. Bryant had an outsized impact on the league's current generation of young stars. It will likely reverberate through the game for years to come.

Lower Merion held a ceremony Feb. 1 to honor Bryant's memory, including hanging his No. 33 jersey in the gymnasium which bears his name. Gianna Bryant's jersey was retired at Harbor Day School during a ceremony in the school's gymnasium Wednesday.

According to the Times, ticket information for the public memorial is not yet available, but it will likely be an incredible scene.
