All-Star center Joel Embiid is out for the Sixers' game vs. the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Center.

Embiid rolled his ankle while stepping on the foot of Amir Johnson during Friday’s practice.

Head coach Brett Brown told reporters Embiid would go through a pregame warmup to determine his status. After warming up, Embiid was ruled out.

Embiid has had an excellent start to the season, averaging 29.6 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.4 blocks per game for the 2-3 Sixers.

With Embiid out, Johnson and Mike Muscala will need to play larger roles for the Sixers. Johnson, who is averaging 6.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, has been subpar defensively. His 114.7 defensive rating is worst on the Sixers. Muscala missed the Sixers' first three games with a sprained ankle.

The Sixers swept their four games against the Hornets last season, winning each contest by double digits. Embiid played in three of those games, averaging 22 points and 13.3 rebounds. He missed the Sixers’ last game against Charlotte on Apr. 1 with an orbital fracture of his left eye.
