Sixers interested in reunion with veteran big man: report

While the Sixers pursue P.J. Tucker and keep tabs on Kevin Durant's sudden trade request, they'd also like to add depth to a roster that was severely lacking after last season's James Harden trade.

And it sounds like one way they're looking to add talent to the bench is by running back one of last offseason's better moves.

The Sixers signed center Andre Drummond to be the lead backup for Joel Embiid last August to a 1-year veteran minimum deal, and Drummond was pretty darn effective in that role before they traded him to the Nets in the Harden deal.

Now, according to a report Thursday from NBC Sports Philadelphia's John Clark, the Sixers' front office has its eyes trained on Drummond again to pad their backup frontcourt rotation:

Very interesting! And I frankly like it.

I'll admit I was a little surprised by the decision to bring Drummond in last offseason, considering his up-and-down relationship with Joel Embiid and the generally waning state of his game - especially in the modern basketball world.

But Drummond proved during the 2021-22 season, both in Philly and in Brooklyn, that he still has plenty left in the tank.

Drummond, who turns 29 this summer (which seems impossible), averaged 7.9 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game last year while posting a 57.4% true shooting percentage, the second-highest mark of his career.

Should a team be breaking the bank for Drummond? Of course not. But he's still got value in today's NBA, and I'd happily welcome him back even if finding playing time for both him and Paul Reed behind Embiid could get a little wonky.

Now, Drummond is reportedly of interest to a pair of other Eastern Conference teams in the Bulls and the Knicks, so Clark's reporting about Drummond's price being too high for the Sixers might end up being the undoing there.

But for the right price (i.e., another veteran minimum) I'd definitely be all aboard the reunion train.
