The Sixers will retire Dolph Schayes' No. 4 on Jan. 23 in a special halftime ceremony during their game against the Celtics, the team revealed Monday.
Schayes, chosen as one of the Top 50 players in NBA history back in 1996, died on Dec. 10 at 87.
One of the NBA's first truly skilled big men, Schayes spent his entire 15-year career with the Syracuse Nationals, who became the Philadelphia 76ers before his final season. He was the Sixers' player-coach in their inaugural season of 1963-64 and continued to coach for two more seasons.
Schayes' No. 4 will be the ninth number retired by the Sixers. However, the Sixers say Nerlens Noel will continue to wear the number in Schayes' honor.
