Drexel hires Army's Zach Spiker as head coach

Updated: March 25, 11:50 a.m.

Zach Spiker will be the next head men's basketball coach at Drexel, a source on Thursday conformed to Comcast SportsNet's Neil Hartman

The school announced the hiring Friday morning.

“Zach Spiker is an exceptional coach and a person of integrity,” Drexel director of athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer said in a statement released by the school. “Zach has unbelievable energy and will bring an excitement to the Drexel fan base. His personality and playing style fits the aspirations of our University as a creative, fast-paced, and innovative place of higher education.”

Spiker was previously the head coach at Army, a position he held since 2009. He owns a 102-112 record at the helm of the Black Knights. Prior to being named head coach at Army, Spiker was an assistant coach at Cornell University. Army finished this past season with a 19-14 record, tying them with Navy for the best overall record in the Patriot League. They also earned a berth in the Collegeinsider.com Tournament, where they lost to NJIT.

In 2013, Spiker guided Army to a 16-15 record, its first winning season in 28 years and its first winning season in the Patriot League (8-6). He was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year and a finalist for the Hugh Durham Award, given to the nation's top mid-major coach, and the Skip Prosser Man of the Year

Spiker replaces Bruiser Flint at Drexel, who coached at the school for 15 years. Flint finished with a record of 245-217 with the Dragons and never took them to the NCAA Tournament. Flint was fired after the end of this past season when the Dragons went 6-25.
