A Plea for the Cessation of In-Broadcast Phone Calls

Share

If you watched the Phillies-Braves game last night, you were no doubt holl'in at the TV in the 5th inning, when with Pat Burrell at the plate, the broadcast team of Tom McCarthy and Sarge Matthews was saddled with talking to Phillies 2008 first-round draft pick Anthony Hewitt for several minutes rather than, ya know, calling the game.

Hanley Ramirez, huh? Worst home run call ever. The young prospect is hardly audible, and is stammering through some "who is your MLB hero" stock when Burrell goes yard. Two weeks we've been waiting for this team to wake up at the plate, and now that it has, we're listening to phone calls and after-the-fact home run calls.

I'm honestly interested to hear about Hewitt. But... time and place... We have nearly 24-hour sports media coverage in Philly, laden with player and front office interviews. We don't need them during the 3 hours a day we actually get to watch the action. This goes DOUBLE for guests joining the team in the booth.

/you know what really grinds my gears?
