Manuel Takes Second in Manager of the Year Voting

Lou Piniella, manager of a Chicago Cubs team that hasn't won a championship in centuries, was voted NL manager of the year. Charlie Manuel came in second. The only thing that makes this bearable is the fact that voting took place before the post-season. But then, why vote before all managerial decisions are made?

Scott Lauber recalls a fitting story from Charlie Manuel's little speech at CBP on the day of the parade.

"Charlie, you've got a lot of seconds," Montgomery said with a smile.

"Well," Manuel said on Oct. 31, the World Series trophy at his side, "we ain't second anymore."

Charlie may be second in some dumb voting but he's first in our hearts.
