Pat Devlin to Transfer

Share

Troubling news from Happy Valley tonight as The Collegian reports Pat Devlin will transfer out of the Penn State program.  There isn't much in official news available yet, but the quarterback most likely is seeking playing time that simply does not exist after the excellent 11-1 season under junior Daryll Clark.  If that is in fact the case, Devlin would choose a Division 1AA school such as Delaware, Villanova, or Richmond (all hypothetically speaking at this point) because under NCAA rules he would lose a year of eligibility anyway to switch to a program on the same level.

The story is especially strange because Devlin made the decision with the Rose Bowl looming, so it will be interesting to see whether this is just a situation where a kid is ready to move forward or if there are some other aspects at play here.  Could the possible departure of QB coach Jay Paterno play a role?  Is there some aspect of the program he is unhappy with?

Devlin's transfer could leave PSU scrambling to recruit a QB this spring to be ready to play by 2010.
