Philly sports in need of a serious comeback

I'm not a sailing fan but I do have tremendous respect for a team or athlete that doesn't quit, and clearly that's what happened off the San Francisco Bay this week.

Oracle Team USA completed arguably the greatest comeback in sports history by winning eight races in the past week to stun New Zealand and capture the oldest trophy in international sports, the America's Cup.

How big of a comeback was it? Comparisons have been made to the Flyers' overcoming an 0-3 deficit to the Bruins in the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs and the Red Sox's winning the final four games of the 2004 ALCS over the Yankees.

There is nothing like a comeback.

No Eagles fan will ever forget DeSean Jackson's punt return for a touchdown on the last play of regulation to complete a 28-0 run in the last eight minutes against the Giants. It erased a 31-10 deficit.

Philly teams need a comeback in a big way. Last year, the four major sports teams in town went a full calendar year without reaching the playoffs. The last time that happened in this city was 1993-94.

Next week, the Flyers open the regular season with plenty of optimism and the best chance of success in the near future of any local pro team.

The Sixers, who open training camp this weekend, are clearly in a rebuilding mode, and the Eagles are still a work in progress, as well.

The Phillies are trying to re-invent themselves with a combination of young and veteran players.

No team appears on the verge of a championship. Philly was the city of champions in the '80s. It was the envy of every city in America. Granted the Flyers, Sixers, Eagles and Phillies have enjoyed some success at times in the past decade or so, with each team reaching their sports' ultimate game, but no one sees that happening again anytime soon.

This city has made a great comeback on the international stage, but unfortunately in the sports world it's 4th-and-26 and in need of a first down.

Yes, miracles do happen and Philly sure could use one right now. Why not start on Sunday in Denver? That will get the town buzzing.
