Just when we thought we'd heard everyone's opinion on the Phillies signing Cliff Lee in December... In yesterday's Daily News, Paul Hagen brought us a story of baseball fandom in the upper reaches of the musical societies of Philadelphia and New York. His piece begins with a Philadelphia Orchestra member who years ago shed his bred-in Yankee heritage for Phillies fandom, but then moves on to the sentiments of Mr. Paul Simon. You see, Paul may be one of the greatest songwriters and musicians of all time, but when it comes to the Lee signing, he's just your basic Yankees fan.
Click here to read how these two musicians got to talking about baseball, a conversation that yielded this gem from Paul:
So Paul Simon leaned over the guy sitting directly in front of him, an orchestra member who always wears a Phillies shirt to rehearsals, and looked him directly in the eye.
"I'm so ticked about the Cliff Lee deal. We had him. We really had him. I thought we had him. You guys are really at the beginning of a dynasty here," he said.
