2020 NFL draft positional breakdown: Quarterback

Share

Every day leading up to the 2020 NFL draft, we’ll be taking a look at this draft class by position. We’ll highlight a few players who will fit the Eagles and separate them into three categories based on where they’re likely to get drafted.

We already looked at tight end, receivers, linebackers, running backs, cornerbacks and offensive tackles

Up today: Quarterbacks.

At No. 21

Yeah, that’s not happening.

In the middle

Anthony Gordon, Washington State, 6-2, 205

You’ll notice that Gordon is the shortest guy on the list. It seems like Doug Pederson prefers taller quarterbacks but maybe he’d make an exception for Gordon. Gordon was just a one-year starter at Washington State because he had to wait his turn behind Gardner Minshew, who is coming off an impressive rookie season with the Jaguars. Like Minshew, Gordon comes from Washington State’s Air Raid offense and put up crazy college stats. He threw for nearly 5,600 yards and 48 touchdowns in 2019. He’ll need to prove he can be productive away from Mike Leach’s system.

James Morgan, FIU, 6-4, 229

While there are some things to clean up in his game, Morgan has a big arm not just down the field but his short and intermediate throws have enough zip to find small windows — though sometimes that hurts him with the throws he tries to make. But he started 37 games at the college level at Bowling Green and then Florida International. At least the strong arm gives Morgan a chance to be a strong upside developmental player.

Late-round sleeper(s)

Steven Montez, Colorado, 6-4, 231

A three-year starter at Colorado, Montez threw for at least 2,800 yards and 17 touchdowns in each of his three years as a starter. Not just a quarterback, Montez has the ability to take off when there’s nothing open downfield. He rushed for 745 yards in his college career. Things to work out in his game but he’s big, strong and athletic. The raw tools are there.

Jake Luton, Oregon State, 6-6, 224

The tallest QB of the bunch, Luton came on strong in 2019, when he threw for 2,714 yards with 28 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. He’s a lanky prospect right now who might need to fill out a little more at the pro level.

Cole McDonald, Hawaii, 6-3, 215

Here’s a big project but you can understand why teams will be interested. McDonald had a solid college career but needs more than a little refinement at the next level. But as an athlete, he’s very intriguing. At the combine, McDonald was in at least the 90th percentile in both jumps and the 40-yard dash. He ran a 4.58, the fastest time among all QBs in Indy.
