Trent Cole is an Indianapolis Colt.
After already inking offensive lineman Todd Herremans and reportedly snagging Frank Gore from the Eagles, Indianapolis officially agreed to terms on Tuesday night with Cole.
According to a report by ESPN's Adam Caplan, it's a two-year, $16 million deal with $8 million guaranteed.
Cole had taken visits since the Eagles informed him last week that he would be released after both sides failed to agree on a pay cut. He stopped at Tampa Bay and Cleveland before heading out to the Indianapolis, where Herremans — who belonged to the same 2005 Eagles draft class as Cole — has already signed a one-year deal.
With the Colts, Cole will play for just the second team in his 11-year career. He also reunites with Ryan Grigson, the team’s general manager whose career came up in the Eagles’ scouting department.
Cole, a fifth-round pick out of Cincinnati, made two Pro Bowls with the Eagles and recorded 85½ sacks. He had four double-digit sack seasons in his first five seasons and is second to Reggie White on the Eagles’ career sacks list.
The Colts play a 3-4 defense, so Cole will likely continue his career as an outside linebacker who plays standing up. He’s played outside linebacker the past two seasons under Kelly.
He played eight seasons at defensive end under former Eagles coach Andy Reid before moving to outside linebacker when Kelly changed the defensive front.
The Eagles tried to retain Cole by asking him to take a pay cut from the $10 million base salary he was slated to make. He carried a $12.6 million cap hit in 2015 stemming from the extension he signed March 14, 2012, that paid out around $14.5 million in guaranteed money. He was also slated to make $14 million in 2016.
Cole had said after the season that he’d be willing to take a pay cut to preserve his roster spot. He and the Eagles spoke several times last week in attempt to hammer out a new deal but both sides couldn’t come to an agreement and the Eagles released him Wednesday.
