It has been over three weeks since the Eagles fired offensive coordinator Mike Groh and you can cross yet another name off the list of possible replacements.
Some news from Super Bowl Sunday:
While the Eagles had never been linked to LaFleur by reports, the connection was a logical one. He is one of the few people who will coach in the Super Bowl who would have made sense as a possible OC, which would have explained why the Eagles have been taking their time and why they’ve been so secretive about this search.
A few days ago, Reuben Frank theorized that the length of the Eagles’ search pointed to either LaFleur or 49ers run game coordinator Mike McDaniel. So maybe McDaniel is still an option. He’s a young coach who would come from a different background and could possibly bring new ideas to Doug Pederson and the Eagles’ offense.
The only candidates who we know have reportedly interviewed for the job are Graham Harrell, James Urban and Press Taylor. Harrell and Urban are staying at USC and with the Ravens, respectively, and Taylor would be an internal hire.
If the Eagles take this long to promote quarterbacks coach Taylor, the optics wouldn’t be great. Right or wrong, it would certainly look like they missed out on their top choices and promoted Taylor as a backup plan.

If McDaniel is the guy, there’s a chance the Eagles could have already secretly interviewed him. And if he is the Eagles’ target, once the Super Bowl is over, they would probably want to move quickly.
The Eagles have four positions to fill — offensive coordinator, wide receivers coach, defensive backs coach and defensive line coach — and they’re expected to announce all the hires at the same time. According to reports, Marquand Manuel will be their DBs coach and Matt Burke will be the new DL coach.
As for offensive coordinator? Maybe we’ll find out soon enough.
