In the next few weeks, we will be unveiling our all-time Eagles team.
We enlisted the help of Eagles reporters Reuben Frank and Dave Zangaro, Quick Slants hosts Derrick Gunn and Barrett Brooks and Quick Slants producer Mike Mulhern for voting.
We asked each person to rank their top five players at 16 different positions. A 1st-place vote was worth five points, a 2nd-place vote was worth four, and so on.
Up today: Cornerback
Complete voting:
1. Eric Allen = 25
2. Troy Vincent = 18
3. Asante Samuel = 17
4. Tom Brookshier = 5
5. Herm Edwards = 4
6. Lito Shepard = 3
7. Bobby Taylor = 2
8. Sheldon Brown = 1
The breakdown:
NFL
Allen was another unanimous selection, taking all five first-place votes. Very deserving. After that, Vincent edged out Samuel. I was actually pretty surprised it was that close.
Did we get it right?
Yeah, I believe we did. Allen is the best corner in franchise history and he should be in the Hall of Fame. The fact that he’s been snubbed for this long is a real head-scratcher. In his seven years with the Eagles, he was a five-time Pro Bowler and intercepted 34 passes. It’s a travesty that Allen has never even been a finalist in the HOF voting.
After that, Vincent deserves to make the list. One of the greatest free agent signings in team history, Vincent got to town in 1996. He made five Pro Bowls from 1999-2003 before finishing out his career with the Bills and Redskins.
Samuel played just four seasons with the Eagles but he was the last great corner the Eagles had. He made three straight Pro Bowls and had 23 interceptions in his four years. Samuel actually had more picks with the Eagles than the Patriots.
After that, it’s a shame that Brookshier and Edwards didn’t get more votes. Brookshier played in a different era but he spent seven seasons with the Eagles, including that 1960 championship team. His No. 40 is hanging from the rafters for a reason.
