Eagles Draft Preview: In Howie We Trust

A lot of people have said bad things about Howie Roseman in recent weeks and months. Like that he’s a nerd who can’t work with anyone. Like that he never played the game. Like that he has no credentials other that Jeffrey Lurie likes him.

Please.

So far this offseason, Howie has done what was necessary: He’s gotten rid of all of Chip Kelly’s mistakes. Demarco Murray? Gone. Kiko Alonso? Gone. Byron Maxwell? Gone. Oregon players on the roster? Far fewer!

Howie gets what’s important: the franchise’s main objective should be to embarrass, undermine, and otherwise screw over Chip Kelly. All else is secondary. Everyone knows the most important trait in an NFL GM is willingness to make moves out of pure spite for his immediate predecessor.

The NFL draft is only a couple of weeks away, and I agree with what Angelo suggested earlier this week: Howie should do whatever he has to do to trade up from the #8 pick to the #1 pick, in order to draft quarterback Carson Wentz. Think about all that would accomplish:

- The Eagles would move up from drafting 8th, therefore putting them ahead of the 49ers, who pick seventh and coached by… Chip Kelly.

- The Eagles would be trading up, with the Titans, to get a quarterback- something Chip was unable to do last year for Marcus Mariota.

- Kelly most likely wants Carson Wentz badly, and if the Eagles get him, Chip is foiled again.

- If the Eagles get Wentz, he’ll eventually steal the starting job from Chip Kelly’s guy, Sam Bradford.

See, everyone wins.

And then, when Howie’s done, he should trade up to the 27th pick in the first round- one spot ahead of the Chiefs, in order to screw Andy Reid, too.

No matter what they have to trade- players, draft choices- I see no downside to doing this. The Eagles might even contend next year, now that the defending Super Bowl champs are quarterbacked by Mark Sanchez.

The last two weeks have taught us that not only is Roseman absolutely the right man to run the Eagles’ player personnel operation, but that the man is a genius and a visionary who deserves not only a contract extension, but possibly even more personnel power than he already has. Don’t be surprised if a year from now, Lurie announces that Doug Pederson is no longer allowed in the draft room.

Other Philly sports takes:

- I picked Temple to win the tournament, but congrats to Villanova anyway.

- As pointed out by Claude Giroux earlier this week, the Flyers have been on a tear ever since CSN’s Tim Panaccio slipped on the ice in Montreal last month. I think all the local teams should follow their lead and look into sacrificing local reporters.

- Congrats to Pete Mackanin on his second contract extension in six months. Can the Phils give him one more before opening day?

- I can’t believe Josh Innes said on the air last week that women have no place in sports talk radio. Hasn’t he ever heard of the Wingettes? It was especially gutsy for him to say so in a segment sponsored by Cheerleaders gentleman’s club.

- Who’s your favorite injured Sixers center? It’s neck-and-neck for me between Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor, although I appreciate that they’ve brought back Elton Brand for nostalgia’s sake. Nerlens Noel was a candidate for awhile, but he’s been healthy for the better part of two years. Let’s get real, though: Compared to Andrew Bynum, they’re all amateurs.
