Alex Boone, OL
Age: 29
Height: 6-7
Weight: 330
Last team: San Francisco 49ers
Scouting report
Boone made the 49ers back in 2010 as an undrafted rookie free agent practice squadder out of Ohio State and by Year 3 in the NFL, he was a full-time starter on a Super Bowl team. Boone started 59 of a possible 64 games the last four years, but it seems more likely than not the 49ers aren’t going to try to re-sign him since with Anthony Davis coming out of retirement, they want Boone to play guard and he’s looking for offensive tackle money. One other thing that might play into the 49ers’ decision whether to re-sign him: Boone is very outspoken and Chip Kelly is not a fan of guys who speak their mind. I’m guessing Boone’s days in San Francisco are over.
My take
Boone can play guard or tackle at a near-Pro Bowl level, and he’s the kind of guy that could be appealing to the Eagles, since they can stick him at one of the vacant guard spots right away and then give him a shot at tackle once Jason Peters finally moves on. Offensive linemen like Boone — no Pro Bowls but solid starters — are making $5 to $6 million per year, and the Eagles could fit him into their rapidly shrinking salary cap. What also makes Boone really attractive is his age. Boone just turned 29 this week, so if you give him a four-year deal, you’re looking at a guy who would be 32 at the end of the deal and presumably still at or near his prime. Even if the Eagles target the O-line in the draft, they’re going to need to address it in free agency as well because they need help now. Boone offers that. He’d be at the top of my shopping list.
