Eagles hire former NFL wide receiver Aaron Moorehead as receivers coach

The Eagles are hiring former Colts receiver Aaron Moorehead as their next wide receivers coach, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The Eagles were first linked to Moorehead for the opening by a report last week. PhillyVoice.com first reported the hire on Thursday morning.

Moorehead will be the Eagles’ sixth receivers coach in six years and their fifth in five years in the Doug Pederson Era.

While he has never coached at the NFL level, Moorehead played for the Colts from 2003-07 and was on the Colts team that won Super Bowl XLI.

It seemed like this time around the Eagles prioritized hiring a receivers coach who had played at the NFL level. Every candidate they were linked to had played in the league.

Moorehead, 39, has been the receivers coach at Vanderbilt for the past two seasons. Before that he had the same position at Texas A&M from 2015-17 and at Virginia Tech from 2013-14. He began his coaching career as a grad assistant at New Mexico in 2009 and held the same position at Stanford from 2010-12 (when Zach Ertz was there).

At Texas A&M, Moorehead coached a couple NFL draft picks in Christian Kirk and Josh Reynolds.

The Eagles once had tremendous stability at their receivers coach position under Andy Reid and even with Chip Kelly but have really struggled to solidify the position under Pederson.

1999-12: David Culley
2013-15: Bob Bicknell
2016: Greg Lewis
2017: Mike Groh
2018: Gunter Brewer
2019: Carson Walch

The Eagles fired Walch about a month ago, when they also fired offensive coordinator Mike Groh.

With the Eagles’ receiver position in flux, there’s a good chance Moorehead will have some young and new talent to work with in 2020.

After this hire and the news yesterday, it seems like the Eagles’ coaching staff is really coming together. Press Taylor is the new passing game coordinator, Marquand Manuel is expected to be the DBs coach and Matt Burke is expected to be the DL coach. The Eagles are also hiring Rich Scangarello and Andrew Breiner as offensive assistants.

Expect an official announcement from the Eagles about all these hires soon.
