Eagles Mailbag: Ryan Mathews, tight ends and trades

Share

After a 27-16 loss to the Panthers on Sunday Night Football, the Eagles are on their bye week and won't be back in action until next Sunday night in Dallas.

The Birds have a losing record (3-4) after seven games and haven't lived up to high expectations.

With all that in mind, let's take a dip into this week's Twitter mailbag:

Some of this was to be expected to start the season. With a new quarterback and many new players across the board, there was going to be an adjustment period. I'm just not sure anyone thought some of these problems would last this long, though.

Sam Bradford needs to get in sync with his wide receivers. There has been a little improvement there but it needs to get better. Sure, their level of comfort will continue to get better but after seven games, they should have a good enough feel for each other.

The pre-snap penalties are just brutal for the coaching staff. They can live with a holding or a pass interference penalty here or there but pre-snap penalties are things that should be easily fixed. This team just hasn't fixed them.

Here's an example of one that probably drove coaches crazy: In the first quarter against Carolina, the Eagles were using a silent count. Matt Tobin was still at right guard and it was his job to tap Jason Kelce. Once Kelce felt the tap, he should have snapped the ball. One problem: Tobin missed and when Lane Johnson saw Tobin's arm move, he assumed Kelce would snap the ball and Johnson jumped, committing a false start.

Things will probably get better but that doesn't mean these kinds of miscommunications and penalties will completely subside.

The Eagles have actually been using 12 personnel (two tight end sets) more often in recent weeks, so they're getting there.

The problem is the Eagles have needed to leave Celek on the line as an extra blocker to help the offensive line. The sturdier the line, the easier it is for Chip Kelly and Pat Shurmur to let Celek run routes and catch passes. They've been utilizing him as a blocker a lot this season and blocking is an area where Ertz is steadily improving.

First off, trades are pretty hard to pull off in the NFL. We don't see many player-for-player trades in the league. Sure, it seems easy to say "the Eagles need a wideout and these two players aren't working, so let's trade them." That's not how it works, though.

Murray has a big contract and with his lack of production early in the season, there's not a line of teams ready to take that on.

Matthews is going through a rough stretch right now but he still has plenty of time to get better. The drops have to be in his head at this point but I think he'll eventually get over it. He had a really good rookie season, so seven bad games is too early to give up on him.

Nope. I don't think so. That's just going off of what Kelly and the team has done to this point. I absolutely think Murray's contract plays a role in his carries even though the team will never admit it.

The other possibility is Kelly believes this is the way to utilize Ryan Mathews without getting him hurt. Mathews is a guy who has had injury trouble throughout his career as a bell cow back. So the thinking here might be: We can have him for 10 carries per game for the whole season or use him up early.

For me, enough's enough. Mathews is clearly the better back right now. He should be starting. I just don't think it's going to happen.
