3:57 p.m.: That’s a terrible loss. The Eagles had a chance to win at the end, but Wentz coughed up the ball at the end and the Eagles lost a tough one.
The Eagles had a chance to get a statement win, but lost in a disaster. That can’t happen. Ugly.
Panthers 21, Eagles 17
3:46 p.m.: What a mess. The Panthers just scored their third touchdown of the fourth quarter to take their first lead of the game. They were up 17-0 going into the fourth quarter. Now, they’re in danger of blowing this in epic fashion.
After the Panthers scored their second touchdown, the Eagles’ offense went 3-and-out and then Carolina drove 69 yards on 10 plays to take a lead with under 1:30 left.
Panthers 21, Eagles 17
3:29 p.m.: The Panthers went 87 yards and scored another touchdown and then got a two-point conversion and all of a sudden, we have a close game. There’s 4:08 left in the game.
Eagles 17, Panthers 14
3:12 p.m.: The Panthers got on the board in the fourth quarter after going 80 yards on 11 plays. Curtis Samuel ran in a 14-yard touchdown to get some points for the Panthers.
Eagles 17, Panthers 6
2:57 p.m.: The Eagles’ first drive of the second half was an absolute monster. They went 94 yards on 17 plays and took 9:22 off the clock. Carson Wentz threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Goedert to cap it.
Eagles 17, Panthers 0
2:39 p.m.: The Panthers got the ball on the first drive of the half and came away with no points. Michael Bennett had a few big plays on the drive and Cam Newton was flagged for intentional grounding on third down to take Carolina out of field goal range.
2:18 p.m.: We’re at halftime and the Eagles are up by 10 points.
Eagles 10, Panthers 0
The Eagles should probably be up even more. They out-gained the Panthers 222-83 in the first two quarters. The Eagles had an interesting strategy at the end of the first half, electing to let the time run out. A big play from Wendell Smallwood was wiped out by a questionable holding call on Brandon Brooks and then the Eagles elected to wind down the clock.
QB comparison from the first half:
Carson Wentz: 15/18, 208, 1 TD, RT 133.3
Cam Newton: 4/9, 24 yards, 0 TD, RT 51.6
1:58 p.m.: Alshon Jeffery and Zach Ertz made some highlight-reel catches on this drive that set up a 46-yard field goal from Jake Elliott. Going with the wind, he drilled this one.
Eagles 10, Panthers 0
1:45 p.m.: Early in the second quarter, the Eagles capped off a 74-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz to Alshon Jeffery. Jeffery and Zach Ertz had some big plays on the drive.
Their touchdown celebration was pretty good too. Wentz played goalie and Jeffery took a direct kick with a wall of Eagles lined up as defenders.
Eagles 7, Panthers 0
1:38 p.m.: That’s it for the first quarter. The Eagles and Panthers are in a chippy defensive battle. The Eagles were able to get more going offensively in the first 15 minutes but don’t have any points to show for it.
Eagles 0, Panthers 0
1:28 p.m.: The Eagles moved the ball down the field and even converted a fourth down before Jake Elliott missed a 36-yard kick. He missed it wiiiide right.
1:05 p.m.: At the coin flip, there was some drama between Malcolm Jenkins and Eric Reid. Reid had to be restrained and eventually was taken back to his sideline, where he exchanged words with Torrey Smith, a former Eagles.
Jenkins and Reid have some history based in disagreements about the Players Coalition, the group Jenkins has been leading.
12:45 p.m.: Kickoff is almost here.
11:30 a.m.: Haloti Ngata (calf) is inactive for today's game after coming into the weekend listed as questionable. Jordan Mailata is active for his first NFL game.
11:10 a.m.: If you're going to the game today, Brian Dawkins will be receiving his Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence at halftime.
He got a sneak peek of it before the game.
11:04 a.m.: Hey, I remember this guy! Torrey Smith, now with the Panthers after his one season in Philly, is back in the house for today's game. He lasted longer in Carolina than Daryl Worley did in Philly.
10:14 a.m.: He got me.
10:10 a.m.: There might be some sun, but there’s also a ton of wind. Check out those turbines go.
That’s something to watch during the game. The wind could affect deep passes, punts and field goals.
9:52 a.m.: Some rain came through in South Philly, but eventually those clouds left and some sunshine peeked through. The rain obviously didn’t deter any tailgaters.
The lots are packed yet again.
8:45 a.m.: Good morning, everyone! It’s game day with an important game against the Panthers. Here are five matchups to watch today.
I’m heading down to South Philly soon and will update this page all day throughout the game.
