Eagles vs. Vikings live: Score, highlights, analysis from NFL Week 5 game

Share

7:26 p.m.: The Eagles couldn’t recover the onside kick and the Vikings run out the clock. The Eagles fall to 2-3 on the season. They’d have to win out to get back to 13 wins like they had a year ago. This season is starting to unravel.

Final: Vikings 23, Eagles 21

7:14 p.m.: After the Eagles decided to punt instead of going for what would have been around a 58-yarder, the Vikings drove down the field and Dan Bailey made a 52-yarder to make it a two-possession game.

Vikings 23, Eagles 13

7:05 p.m.: The Eagles punted. There's 9 minutes left.

6:55 p.m.: More life! Kirk Cousins threw a backward pass that was dropped and Nigel Bradham fell on the fumble. The Eagles have the ball on the Vikings’ 30-yard line down six points with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

6:44 p.m.: The Eagles’ have some life at the Linc. They traveled down the field 66 yards on 10 plays and capped it with a 12-yard pass to Wendell Smallwood in the end zone. Doug Pederson then went for the 2-point conversion and converted with a Smallwood pitch play.

The Birds have life!

Vikings 20, Eagles 14

6:33 p.m.: The Eagles are down after three quarters, but are driving with a chance to cut the lead to one score.

6:26 p.m.: The Eagles went 67 yards on eight plays in 4:35 before Jake Elliott kicked a 28-yard field goal to get the Eagles back within two touchdowns. Fans wanted Doug Peterson to go for it on 4th-and-5 from the 10, but Pederson wisely kicked the field goal. They needed points.

The big play on the drive was a 31-yard pass to Alshon Jeffery. It was his first catch on the day.

Vikings 20, Eagles 6

6:15 p.m.: After the Jay Ajayi fumble, the Vikings threw a deep ball to Adam Thielen for 68 yards and eventually kicked a field goal.

Vikings 20, Eagles 3

But the most interesting thing was that after Jalen Mills broke up a pass on third down to force the field goal, he began to smack talk with Thielen, who just beat him for that long gain. Fletcher Cox came over and shoved Mills out of the way and those two had brief words. Good for Fletch. Talking smack to a team that’s beating you up isn’t wise.

6:06 p.m.: This isn’t going well. The Eagles drove all the way down the field to the 6-yard line but then Jay Ajayi fumbled the ball away. Scoring on that drive would have made it a one-score game. That’s the Eagles’ second turnover of the day.

It looked like maybe Ajayi just tried to do too much. That just can’t happen, not when the Eagles are so close to finally getting in the end zone and getting over their offensive woes.

5:42 p.m.: Oof. Michael Bennett was called for a roughing the passer for hitting Kirk Cousins low on 2nd-and-6 from the Eagles’ 23-yard line. It was a half-the-distance penalty that set the Vikings up from the 11-yard line. Two plays later, Cousins hit Adam Thielen for a three-yard touchdown. Fans were not thrilled. And they definitely have a solid case. That call was highly questionable and was a killer.

That will do it for the first half. The Eagles’ defense finally gave up a touchdown in the red zone and the offense can’t get anything going. This time during the NFC Championship Game, there was a party at the Linc. Right now, it’s quieter than a library.

Vikings 17, Eagles 3

5:22 p.m.: Lane Johnson let Stephen Weatherly get inside of him and Weatherly forced a fumble that landed in the arms of Linval Joseph. The 329-pound lineman caught the ball and rumbled the other way for a 64-yard touchdown return. No one could catch him.

Just a terrible play from Lane Johnson. During the week, he lamented that he can have 40 good plays and one bad one and everyone talks about that bad one. Well, this one was really bad. There’s 4:12 left in the half.

Vikings 10, Eagles 3

5:15 p.m.: Dan Bailey came in to today’s game as the second-most accurate kicker in the NFL history and he’s already missed two field goals today. One from 28 yards and now one from 45 yards in the second quarter. The Eagles will take it.

5:05 p.m.: After they had negative yards in the first quarter, Carson Wentz finally hit a deep ball to Shelton Gibson. The 48-yarder was the longest catch of Gibson young career and set up a 30-yard field goal for Jake Elliott. It was Gibson’s first catch of the season.

Eagles 3, Vikings 3

4:57 p.m.: That’s the end of the first quarter. The Eagles’ defense is doing it’s job but the offense hasn’t gotten anything going yet. They have had two possessions and two three-and-outs. They’re getting out-gained 103 to minus-4.

Vikings 3, Eagles 0

4:39 p.m.: Not a good start for Isaac Seumalo, who looks like he might be playing on roller skates. He got beat twice in three plays on the opening drive.

4:34 p.m.: The Vikings had a nice drive to start the game, but were stuffed by the Eagles’ red zone defense, which has been really good at home. The big play of the drive was a 24-yard pass to Adam Thielen, but the Eagles held. Brandon Graham batted down a pass on third down to force a field goal attempt. Dan Bailey then doinked a 28-yard field goal off the left upright to keep the game scoreless.

Here comes Carson Wentz and the offense.

3:59 p.m.: The Eagles have left the field from pregame warmups. As expected, Isaac Seumalo took reps at left guard in warmups and will start over Stefen Wisniewski this afternoon.

Seumalo will be on the line to help protect this guy:

2:55 p.m: The Eagles will have Corey Clement (quad) for this game after he missed last weekend. We’ll see how much he’ll be able to do.

Here are the Eagles’ inactives

Haloti Ngata (calf)
Darren Sproles (hamstring)
Derek Barnett (shoulder)
Jordan Mailata
Chance Warmack
Matt Pryor
Nate Sudfeld

2:30 p.m.: The Eagles are on the field for early warmups. We’re not far away from hearing inactives.

Carson Wentz is rocking some hot pink during warmups.

1:07 p.m.: These 4:25 p.m. kickoffs stink. I just want the game to begin, but I guess it’s good for tailgaters. A few more hours to enjoy outside especially on a day where it’s not too hot or too cold.

Obviously, the Vikings fans who were here for the NFC Championship Game weren’t too happy with the behavior of Eagles fans. Seemed to be a pretty mellow crowd near the Wells Fargo Center, where I came in.

11:30 a.m.: Some important info if you're heading to the game. Be safe.

9:13 a.m.: Good morning, everyone! We have a little longer than usual to wait for kickoff today. Not a ton of important 1 p.m. games from an Eagles standpoint. That Jags-Chiefs game should be fun though. The Giants play the Panthers at 1 p.m. and the Packers play the Lions.

As far at this Eagles game goes, here are our expert predictions and 5 matchups to watch to hold you over for a while.

Today's game should be fun for plenty of reasons. The NFC Championship Game rematch catches both teams in a pretty desperate state. It should be good.
