Damontre Moore's "poor football IQ" has made him a bit poorer.
The Giants' defensive end was fined $20,000 for his late hit on QB Sam Bradford during the Eagles' 27-7 win on Monday Night Football.
Moore was flagged in the first quarter for roughing the passer after picking Bradford up and slamming him to the ground seconds after he clearly got rid of the ball. It came after a 3rd-and-10 play that would have resulted in 4th-and-7. Instead, it extended an Eagles drive that culminated with Bradford hitting Riley Cooper for a 32-yard TD to tie the game.
Afterward, Moore gave a ludicrous response when asked about the play, saying he was unaware that such a play could draw a flag.
"Honestly, I think it was just part of me just having poor football IQ, and not (being) aware of the rules of dumping," Moore told reporters.
"It's just one of those things, I've got to get in there and get my football IQ and awareness up. Learn the rules and stuff like that."
It's extremely hard to believe that Moore did not know that dumping a QB so long after the ball had been released was flag-worthy. The NFL is committed to protecting QBs and that was an egregious hit that cost the Giants dearly.
NFL
Tom Coughlin was quite displeased with Moore after the game and that continued into the Giants' practice week.
Here was his response when asked if he can trust Moore.
"I can't really honestly say that," Coughlin told NJ.com. "He's obviously of a high energy. He does give outstanding effort, there's no question about it. But in regard to that, there's absolutely no excuse for anyone for the unnecessary roughness penalty that he committed [Monday] night. You use the word 'trust.' I don't know. That's a good word."
Could that mean Moore's days are numbered? Probably not, considering the Giants have a pathetic pass rush and need all the energy up front they can get.
