Grading the Eagles' moves: CB Leodis McKelvin

CB Leodis McKelvin

Age: 30
Height: 5-10
Weight: 185
Last team: Buffalo Bills
2015 stats: 32 tackles, 9 pass breakups, 2 interceptions in nine games, five starts

It's crucial to remember that not every transaction this time of year is going to move the needle, so to speak. Leodis McKelvin will be 31 years old and has missed 17 games over the past two seasons. That and his low-risk contract -- reportedly two years, up to $6 million -- would seem to suggest he wasn't necessarily signed to be a starter. More likely, McKelvin will provide depth on the outside while battling JaCorey Shepherd for the nickel cornerback job. McKelvin also has experience at safety and returns kicks.

A first-round pick out of Troy in 2008, McKelvin might be on the downside of his career, but if anybody is equipped to squeeze another year or two out of him, it might be defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. McKelvin recorded a career high four interceptions in 10 games under Schwartz's watch in 2014, so a reunion makes sense.

This is an excellent addition, as long as expectations are kept in check. With 60 career starts, experience in the system and position versatility, McKelvin provides a great deal of value to the Eagles, and he could absolutely thrive in the right role. A situation that calls on him to become an every-down player may be less than desirable, but better a seasoned veteran than a total unknown. This is a safe move that adds some much-needed competition to the secondary and helps fill out the 90-man roster.
