RB DeMarco Murray traded to Tennessee Titans, according to reports
Eagles get: Titans' fourth-round pick (No. 97 overall)
Titans get: Eagles' fourth-round pick (No. 110 overall), RB DeMarco Murray
This is what we call "best for both parties." DeMarco Murray wanted out of Philly -- badly enough to reportedly take a pay cut and go to one of the worst teams in the NFL last season -- and gets his wish. Thanks to the contract structure, the Eagles actually saved $4 million against the salary cap through a trade, a scenario that seemed unthinkable after a miserable 2015 campaign.
Some will see this as giving away the 2014 rushing champion for virtually nothing, a 13-spot jump in the fourth round according to John Glennon of The Tennesseean, and technically that's not inaccurate. The Eagles' motivation was clear: dump salary and a malcontent, so the return is essentially inconsequential.
Another way of looking at it is Murray is 28 years old and coming off the least productive season of his career, so to save money much less get anything in return is a bonus. There's some truth to the notion he wasn't a good fit in Chip Kelly's offense, and he could return to form another year removed from his near-historic workload in '14. Then again, Murray's decline is right around the corner regardless if it hasn't begun already, and he was always a little overrated to boot. The Eagles get to wash their hands of the hassle and save a few bucks in the process.
