With the Eagles trailing by eight points Sunday night and a little more than 12 minutes remaining in the game, kicker Caleb Sturgis was called upon for a critical 50-yard field goal attempt.
Sturgis had already made one from 52 yards out and was perfect in his last nine attempts. This one, however, just barely missed wide left as the Eagles' 12-play drive went for naught.
The Panthers answered with a field goal and went on to win, 27-16, to knock the Eagles out of first place (see Instant Replay).
But, according to long snapper Jon Dorenbos, don't blame Sturgis. Blame him.
Regardless of who was at fault, the Eagles did themselves in with plenty of other mistakes — like lots of dropped passes (see 10 observations).
And as a result, first place is gone.
