Eagles backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld broke his non-throwing wrist in Thursday night’s preseason opener, head coach Doug Pederson said.

Sudfeld, 25, will have surgery on Friday morning.

Pederson said the Eagles are excited that the injury is not deemed season-ending, but wouldn’t give a more specific timeframe for return. Pederson said the team would have more updates on Saturday.

With under 30 seconds left in the first half, Sudfeld was driven into the ground and injured his left arm. Isaiah Mack was called for roughing the passer on the play. The backup quarterback braced for impact, which is when the injury occurred.

On the ground, Sudfeld immediately grabbed that left wrist in pain. After leaving the sideline on a cart with his wrist in an air cast, Sudfeld had X-rays at halftime that revealed the break.

Pederson said there are no plans to sign another quarterback right now. That means the Eagles are down to Carson Wentz, Cody Kessler and rookie Clayton Thorson.

“Right now, we’re just going to continue with who we got,” Pederson said. “We’re comfortable with Cody and obviously get Clayton more work. With Nate, this is not season-ending so we’re excited about that.”

After leaving the field, Sudfeld went into the blue medical tent and veteran Kessler replaced him to finish the first half.

Since Super Bowl hero Nick Foles left in free agency this offseason, Sudfeld became the Eagles’ backup quarterback behind Carson Wentz. We expected to see a lot of him this preseason, but now the Eagles might be without him for a while. With Wentz’s injury history, Sudfeld is considered by many to be a key player for the upcoming season.

Entering his fourth NFL season, Sudfeld was having a good night before the injury. He completed 10 of 18 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown, with a passer rating of 107.9.

“I thought he was playing well,” Pederson said. “He was seeing the field good. Great touchdown throw. Had a couple opportunities, missed a little bit wide on a couple throws early, but I thought he really had great poise going in against their No. 1 defense out there and was doing some really good things. Kind of getting into a rhythm there before the half.”
