After what Howie Roseman classified as a “disappointing” 2019 season, the Eagles have plenty of work to do this offseason. Free agency begins on March 18.
Here’s an early look at five cornerbacks for the Birds in free agency:
Byron Jones
Heck, the Eagles’ recent history of signing former Cowboys might be enough to make them think twice here. And Jones is likely going to cash in on a big deal this offseason after playing the 2019 season on a fifth-year option. The former first-round pick out of UConn has just two-career interceptions, but might set a new record for a contract for a CB with that few. Jones can cover, though. He was a Pro Bowler without a pick in 2018.
Chris Harris Jr.
It seems like Harris has been a possible target for the Eagles for about a decade. He’s 30 now and maybe it isn’t wise for the Eagles to sign and rely on another aging veteran. But Harris is still pretty good and is just a year removed from his fourth-career Pro Bowl seasons. He can play on either side and also in the nickel; the Eagles definitely value versatility and it’s a common theme on this list. Spotrac estimates his next contract at three years, $33 million, so he wouldn’t be cheap.
Logan Ryan
NFL
In his seven years, Ryan has missed a total of just three games. He’s never been a Pro Bowl player but he has 17 career interceptions, which ranks him 10th in the NFL among cornerbacks since he entered the league in 2013. Earlier this offseason, the Eagles were already linked with Ryan, who is also a solid tackler, which is important to Jim Schwartz.
Kendall Fuller
You just watched Fuller snag the game-sealing interception in Super Bowl LIV and he’s about to hit the open market. Again, a guy with inside-outside versatility. Another solid run defender, Fuller played in just 11 games this season thanks to a thumb injury. He’s about to turn 25 and is coming off his rookie contract so signing him could be a long-term solution. His brother Vincent played safety for Jim Schwartz in Tennessee from 2005-08.
Bradley Roby
He’ll be 28 before the start of the 2020 season and the former first-round pick played just 10 games for the Texans in 2019 on a one-year deal after playing five years in Denver. Another inside-outside guy, he has never had more than two interceptions in a season. He also has 68 pass-breakups in his six-year NFL career and would add some speed to the Eagles’ secondary.
