NFL mock draft 2019 roundup 6.0: First edition for Eagles after combine

We’ve made it through the combine in Indianapolis, so we really are inching closer and closer to the 2019 draft.

Now, free agency is around the corner and that might change some things too.

But let’s see if the combine changed any projections of what the Eagles will do with the No. 25 pick:

USA TODAY, Doug Farrar

Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware

Here’s what they said: “It’s time for the Eagles to start re-tooling their secondary, and where better to start than with top-level defender with the potential to play either cornerback or safety? The cousin of Hall-of-Fame defensive back Herb Adderley, this Adderley brings a compelling combination of athleticism and coverage talent to a defensive backfield that requires an influx of young talent.”

My take: I like Adderley, but I’m not convinced the Eagles would be willing to take a safety in the first round. Maybe they would. Rodney McLeod is back this season, but after that? And how much longer will Malcolm Jenkins be around? Farrar has the Colts taking DE Clelin Ferrell from Clemson with the 26th pick. I’d take him instead if I were the Eagles and he was on the board.

CBS Sports, Ryan Wilson

Josh Jacobs, RB, Alabama

Here’s what they said: “Same as last week. Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles' contracts expired after the 2018 season and Jacobs is the best runner in the country. He runs angry, is smooth catching passes out of the backfield, and would give Carson Wentz another weapon.”

My take: Jacobs is clearly considered to be the top running back in the draft, so perhaps the Eagles would take a RB in the first round for the first time since the mid-80s, but I’m not buying it. Think about it this way: Would the Eagles be better off with Jacobs + second-round DL and second-round OL or WR … or would they be better taking a lineman in the first round and then using a second-round pick on a running back? To me, it’s all about value. And taking a running back in the first round — a RB who isn’t Zeke or Saquon — doesn’t get enough value.

WalterFootball, Charlie Campbell

Byron Murphy, CB, Washington

Here’s what they said: “Murphy (6-1, 185) played well as part of a loaded Washington secondary that was likely comprised of future NFL talent. In 2018, he totaled 58 tackles with 13 passes broken up and four interceptions. In his freshman season, he notched three interceptions with seven breakups and 16 tackles. Sources say Murphy is a polished corner and they really like what he put on tape. They like his instincts, awareness, ability to play inside or outside, and the excellent coaching/preparation he received from former NFL defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake. Their concerns with Murphy are with his size and him having average playing speed.”

My take: I like Murphy too. But the Eagles have a stable of young and cheap corners already. Here’s what Howie Roseman said last week about the position: “We’ve invested a lot of draft picks at that position and you have to give your young players a chance to grow.” Doesn’t seem like the Eagles are in on using high draft picks on corners. This wouldn’t be a bad pick, by the way. Murphy is worth a first-round selection. Just not sure it’ll be with the Eagles.

NBC Sports Washington, Ben Standig

Cody Ford, OT, Oklahoma

Here’s what they said: “Left tackle Jason Peters turns 37 in January and battled knee injuries in recent seasons. There are also concerns at guard. The Eagles cannot afford to mess up the investment made in quarterback Carson Wentz. The offensive line situation receives a boost with the Oklahoma mauler likely playing guard in the NFL.”

My take: I think offensive tackle is a possibility in the first round. I don’t think it’s as great of a possibility as defensive line, though, and Standig has my draft crush Christian Wilkins going at 26. I’d much rather take him in the first round. Anyway, this was a two-round mock, so Standig has the Eagles taking RB Josh Jacobs at 53 and CB Trayvon Mullen at 57. I doubt Jacobs will still be there at 53 and we already talked about corners. I’d be pretty shocked if the Eagles don’t get a defensive lineman with one of their first three picks.
