NFL Notes: Jamaal Charles out for season with torn ACL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

The star running back hurt his knee in the third quarter of Sunday's loss to Chicago. An MRI on Monday confirmed the tear.

Earlier Monday, coach Andy Reid said "the worst case is the ACL is torn. That's probably the direction it's heading."

Charles was making a cut deep in Bears territory on Sunday when his right knee buckled at a gruesome angle. The four-time Pro Bowl selection needed help from a trainer and linebacker Justin Houston to get off the field, never once putting any weight on the leg.

Charles tore the ACL in his other knee four years ago, missing most of the season.

Cardinals: One-year deal for Dwight Freeney
TEMPE, Ariz. — A person with knowledge of the situation says the Arizona Cardinals have signed outside linebacker Dwight Freeney to a one-year contract.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Monday because the signing had not yet been officially announced by the club.

The move comes after Cardinals' top outside pass rusher, Alex Okafor, went down with a calf injury in Sunday's 42-17 victory at Detroit.

The 35-year-old Freeney, a seven-time Pro Bowl player, has 111 career sacks and led the NFL with 16 sacks in 2004.

His best years came with the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 through 2012. He was with the San Diego Chargers the past two seasons.

Colts: Andrew Luck practices in full
INDIANAPOLIS — Colts quarterback Andrew Luck returned to full participation for Monday's practice for the first time in two weeks.

He is still day-to-day with a sore right shoulder and had been limited in practice since leading Indianapolis to a 35-33 win at Tennessee on Sept. 27. The Colts (3-2) host defending Super Bowl champion New England (4-0) on Sunday night.

Luck says he is hopeful to play against the Patriots after missing the last two games -- at Houston last Thursday and Jacksonville last Sunday.

Luck wouldn't go into detail about what exactly he did in practice and Colts coach Chuck Pagano didn't reveal much either.

Jets: Sheldon Richardson returns from ban
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson has returned to practice after serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Richardson was back with the team Monday following the Jets' bye-week break and coach Todd Bowles says he will play in New York's home game against Washington on Sunday, although his role is uncertain. Bowles wants Richardson to get back into "football shape" and adds that rookie Leonard Williams will continue to see regular playing time despite Richardson coming back.

Richardson could face additional discipline from the league later this season or next after his arrest on charges of resisting arrest in Missouri in July. His next court hearing is Nov. 9.

Richardson says the suspension was "real difficult" and adds that he "brought it on myself."

Browns: Joe Haden concussed
CLEVELAND — Browns star cornerback Joe Haden will likely miss one game with a concussion sustained during Sunday's overtime win at Baltimore.

Haden, who was already playing with a broken right ring finger, got hurt when he came up to stop a screen pass on the first play of the fourth quarter. Browns coach Mike Pettine said Monday that Haden has been placed in the NFL's concussion protocol.

Haden sat out last week's game with the broken finger, but received injections and played with a padded glove against the Ravens.

Also, Browns quarterback Josh McCown said he will continue to receive treatment on his left ankle, which he rolled late in Sunday's 33-30 overtime victory. McCown passed for 457 yards -- a franchise regular-season game record. He's hoping to be able to play this week when the Browns host the Denver Broncos.

Bills: IK Enemkpali activated
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills running back Cierre Wood will miss the remainder of the season because of a knee injury.

And the Bills filled Wood's roster spot on Monday by activating defensive end Ikemefuna Enemkpali, who finished serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's player personal conduct policy. Enemkpali was suspended for a punch that broke the jaw of New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith during a locker room altercation in Aug.

The Bills, who claimed Enemkpali on waivers, were granted a one-week roster exemption and had until Monday to activate or cut the player.

Wood was placed on injured reserve after he was hurt in Buffalo's 14-13 win at Tennessee on Sunday.

Starting running back LeSean McCoy (hamstring) is out indefinitely. Backup Karlos Williams (concussion) has a chance to return Sunday, when Buffalo (3-2) hosts Cincinnati (5-0).
