NFL Notes: WR Dwayne Bowe to sign with Browns

CLEVELAND — A person familiar with the negotiations says free agent wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has agreed to contract terms with the Cleveland Browns.

Bowe, who spent the past eight seasons with Kansas City, is expected to sign the deal on Thursday, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not confirmed the agreement.

With Cleveland, Bowe will become a No. 1 receiver and fill the void created when former Pro Bowler Josh Gordon was suspended for one year for multiple violations of the NFL's drug policy.

A big, athletic receiver, Bowe had 60 catches for 754 yards last season but no touchdowns. Bowe led the league with 15 TDs in 2010 and has averaged 66 catches per season.

The Chiefs released the 30-year-old Bowe last week.

NFL Network first reported Bowe's deal.

Bengals: Devon Still re-signed
CINCINNATI — Defensive tackle Devon Still has re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals after getting good news about his 4-year-old daughter's fight with cancer.

The Bengals offered Still a one-year deal. He waited to see how his daughter, Leah, was doing before making a decision. Results of her tests this week showed her cancer treatments are working.

Still has played in 30 games with Cincinnati during the last three seasons, including 12 last year. He also helped to raise more than $1 million for pediatric cancer research and treatment. His daughter attended a game at Paul Brown Stadium and met Lauren Hill, the Mount St. Joseph freshman basketball player who is dying from brain cancer.

The Bengals also signed free agent cornerback Brandon Ghee.

Bills: TE Charles Clay jumps ship
MIAMI — Tight end Charles Clay is switching teams in the AFC East.

The Miami Dolphins decided Thursday against matching the contract offer Clay received from the Buffalo Bills, so he'll join them after signing their $38 million, five-year offer Tuesday.

The Dolphins had the right to match after giving Clay a transition tag two weeks ago, but they decided the price was too high, and will go with newcomer Jordan Cameron and holdover Dion Sims at tight end.

The Dolphins face salary-cap constraints after signing All-Pro defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to a $114 million, six-year contract last week. Even so, they hosted three free agents for visits Thursday — quarterback Tavaris Jackson, center J.D. Walton and receiver Michael Crabtree.

Clay started 47 games in four years with Miami after being taken in the sixth round of the 2011 draft. He had 58 catches last season for 605 yards and three scores despite knee trouble that hampered him all season.

The Bills made Clay one of their top free-agent targets. He traveled to Buffalo by private jet on March 10, the first day of the league's signing period, and spent several days in the area.

Falcons: Tamme signs
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons have signed free agent Jacob Tamme, looking for help at tight end one year after the retirement of Tony Gonzalez.

Tamme had 14 catches for 109 and two touchdowns with the Denver Broncos last season. He set career highs with 67 catches for 631 yards and four touchdowns with quarterback Peyton Manning and the Colts in 2010. He then followed Manning to Denver, where he played the last three seasons.

Tamme has 178 catches and 10 touchdowns in seven seasons with the Colts and Broncos. He was a fourth-round pick by Indianapolis in 2008 and spent four seasons with the Colts.

Levine Toilolo had 31 catches for 238 yards and two touchdowns as the Falcons' starting tight end last season.

Jets: QB battle won't include Fitzpatrick yet
NEW YORK — The New York Jets' quarterback competition might not heat up until the summer.

While newly acquired Ryan Fitzpatrick continues to rehabilitate from a broken leg, Geno Smith and Matt Simms are expected to get most of the snaps during offseason workouts.

Fitzpatrick, traded from Houston for a conditional seventh-round draft pick last week, is expected to be fully healthy by training camp and compete with Smith for the quarterback job. Fitzpatrick broke his left leg during a game against Indianapolis on Dec. 14.

"He'll be involved in some of the offseason stuff, OTAs," general manager Mike Maccagnan said during a conference call Thursday. "But again, taking it into consideration, too, the rehabilitation for his injuries. So, he may be limited to a certain degree in OTAs."

While Maccagnan wouldn't get into a depth chart — he'll "defer" to coach Todd Bowles — or whether there might be an open competition at the position, he said he would "absolutely" be comfortable heading into training camp with Smith and Fitzpatrick as his main quarterbacks.

But with the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, the Jets have often been linked to Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota in mock drafts. Despite being currently satisfied with having Smith and Fitzpatrick, Maccagnan wouldn't rule out the possibility of drafting either Mariota or Florida State's Jameis Winston. Maccagnan and the Jets attended Mariota's pro day, and plan to be at Winston's later this month.

"I would say simply that I don't think any player is either on or off our board, in terms of what we would do, based on our current roster," Maccagnan said.
