DeVonta Smith wastes no time selling Smith-Hurts shirts

Less than an hour after the Eagles traded up to take him with the No. 10 pick in the draft, DeVonta Smith was already selling a shirt featuring himself and Jalen Hurts.

Something tells me Smith had been ready for this possibility.

The Eagles drafted Smith at 9:35 p.m. on Thursday night and at 10:30 p.m., he sent out a tweet with some new green gear on his website. One NBA Jam-style shirt features Smith and Hurts, former college teammates at Alabama, together again.

While Hurts and Smith were teammates at Alabama, they didn’t play a ton together in games. Hurts’ last year as the full-time starter at Alabama was in 2017, when Smith was a freshman who didn’t play very much. Hurts was the backup for most of 2018 behind Tua Tagovailoa before transferring to Oklahoma.

But the two obviously have a connection.

Earlier this week, Smith was asked about the possibility of reuniting with his former college quarterback and seemed pretty excited about it.

"It would be great (to catch passes from Hurts again)," Smith told CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr. "Jalen is a very talented quarterback and I'd love to play with him. He is a competitor and going to give you a chance to win every game."

Smith also talked about Hurts at his Alabama pro day in March. Smith said he had been in contact with Hurts not long before that pro day.

“Yeah, me and Jalen, we talked recently,” Smith said in late March. “Not just about that but just how the process and things are going. And how’s my training been going and just catching up about life things and things like that. It would be a blessing just to hear any team just call my name. In that situation, it’s just a blessing for anybody.”

While the Eagles haven’t declared Hurts to be the starter in 2021, it’s pretty clear that he will be. The Eagles love competition but it’s hard to imagine them letting Joe Flacco start. And after the Eagles traded away Carson Wentz, they need to find out what they have in Hurts, who was drafted in the second round last year.
