Duce Staley drawing ‘interest' for NFC rival position

Could Duce Staley find a new home in Chicago with former colleague Matt Nagy?

It’s possible, according to Bears writer Adam Jahns of the Athletic in Chicago.

Jahns initially tweeted Friday afternoon that Staley and Nagy had already spoken about a job on the Bears' coaching staff, but he deleted that tweet, saying, “I jumped the gun a little bit,” and then tweeted that the Nagy and Staley actually haven’t spoken, but he added, “There is interest there.”

Jahns did not specify what role Nagy is considering Staley for, but Charles London, who has served as the Bears’ running backs coach since 2018, is expected to join Arthur Smith’s new staff with the Falcons as quarterbacks coach, so as of now the Bears appear to have a vacancy for a running backs coach.

Staley and Nagy were together on Andy Reid’s Eagles staff in 2011 and 2012, when both were quality control coaches - Staley on special teams, Nagy on offense.

When Chip Kelly replaced Reid, Staley remained with the Eagles and Nagy left with Reid for Kansas City, rising from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator when Doug Pederson replaced Kelly.

When Pederson in 2016 replaced Kelly, he kept Staley as well, and in 2018 Nagy replaced John Fox as head coach of the Bears.

Staley has spent 17 of his 19 years in the NFL with the Eagles. He finished his career in 2005 and 2006 with the Steelers.

There would be plenty of familiar faces in Chicago for Staley.

Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor was the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach in 2013, offensive line coach Juan Castillo was with the Eagles under Rhodes and Reid as tight ends coach in 1997, offensive line coach from 1998 through 2010 and defensive coordinator from 2011 through the 2012 bye week. QBs coach John DeFilippo was Pederson’s QBs coach in 2016 and 2017. And linebackers coach Bill Shuey served several roles under Reid from 2003 though 2010.

Staley, 45, interviewed unsuccessfully for the Eagles’ head coaching job in 2016 and 2021 and for the offensive coordinator vacancy in 2018 and 2020.

The Eagles have not officially announced that Nick Sirianni will replace Pederson, and it’s not yet known if Sirianni has any interest in keeping Staley on his staff or if there is any role at this point that Staley would consider staying for.
