Eagles block Lions' request to interview one of their assistant coaches

The Eagles have blocked the Lions from interviewing special teams coach Dave Fipp for a position on the staff of new head coach Dan Campbell, according to beat writer Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press newspaper.

According to Birkett, the Lions requested permission to interview Fipp, "But the Eagles aren't willing to let him go right now."

That's an indication not only that Fipp remains under contract with the Eagles but that there's a chance Fipp could remain with the club under whoever becomes their new head coach.

Fipp and Eagles head coaching candidate Duce Staley have worked together eight years, since the first year Chip Kelly was head coach and through all five years of Doug Pederson's coaching tenure.

Fipp and Campbell worked together with the Dolphins in 2011 and 2012, when Fipp was assistant special teams coach and Campbell was tight ends coach, first under Tony Sparano in 2011 and also under Joe Philbin in 2012.

Current Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who like Staley has interviewed for the Eagles' head coaching vacancy, was also on the Dolphins' staff in 2011, serving as interim head coach after Sparano was fired. A year later, he became the Eagles' secondary coach and then interim defensive coordinator.

Before entering the NFL on Mike Nolan's 49ers staff in 2008, Fipp was a defensive coach in college at Cal Poly, Nevada and San Jose State.
