The Eagles are moving on from senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello after just one season.
Scangarello, 48, will not return to the Eagles’ staff in 2021 as the team will allow his contract to expire, a league source confirmed Thursday to NBC Sports Philadelphia's Reuben Frank. Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan of Inside the Birds first reported the news.
This is the first of many expected changes to the Eagles’ coaching staff after an extremely disappointing 2020 season that ended with a 4-11-1 record.

The Eagles brought in Scangarello for a somewhat undefined role in an unusual offensive structure in 2020. Coming from the Kyle Shanahan offense, Scangarello’s main goal was supposed to be to marry the run and pass game.
This season, the Eagles had the 26th-ranked scoring offense in the NFL and the 24th-ranked offense in terms of yards gained.
“He’s going to be able to bridge the gap,” Pederson said last February about Scangarello’s role. “He’s going to be able to bring together the run division and the pass division. With a blend of formations and plays and things that really tie everything together. He’s going to have his hands all over the game plan as well. A lot of communication. A lot of film study. Yeah, he’ll work with the quarterbacks, just like I do. He’ll have a chance to have some input there."
In August, Scangarello said he came to Philly to be a part of a veteran staff and just find whatever ways he could to help. He was supposed to bring some of that Shanahan background with him to Philadelphia but it’s unclear how much of his influence was ever felt.

The addition of Scangarello seemed like a good idea, but it clearly never worked.
Perhaps some of the reason it didn’t work was because of an unusual offseason that was dominated by virtual meetings. Scangarello was supposed to have a great impact on Carson Wentz but he wasn’t even able to meet with him in person for months. Wentz went on to have the worst season of his career and was benched after 12 games.
Before joining the Eagles, Scangarello was the Broncos’ offensive coordinator in 2019. Before then, he was with the 49ers from 2017-18. He’ll now be looking for his fourth team in four years.
