Eagles reportedly set to interview 1st candidate for DC position

The Eagles have begun the process to put a coaching staff together and it looks like this head coach will actually have some say.

Former NFL safety and Washington Football Team defensive backs coach Chris Harris will interview for the Eagles’ defensive coordinator position, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Harris, 38, is the first known candidate for the position.

The reason it seems like new head coach Nick Sirianni has some power is because Sirianni and Harris crossed over with the Chargers. The two worked together for two seasons in 2016 and 2017 while Sirianni was the Chargers’ receivers coach and Harris was the assistant defensive backs coach.

After Sirianni left to take the OC job under Frank Reich in 2018, Harris stayed on staff with the Chargers and made the move with them to Los Angeles. In 2020, he joined Ron Rivera’s staff in Washington as their DBs coach. Harris played for Rivera in Chicago in 2005-06.

Before joining the Chargers, Harris broke into coaching in 2013, spending two seasons as a quality control guy.

The Washington Football Team runs a 4-3 and the Chargers ran a 4-3 under Gus Bradley before Harris left there.

Even before the Eagles fired Doug Pederson, they were going to need a new defensive coordinator after Jim Schwartz stepped down after five seasons. There was a good chance Schwartz wouldn’t have been retained anyway. The Eagles gave Pederson a big hand in putting together his staff five years ago because of his limited connections in the NFL world. It doesn’t seem like Sirianni is going to have that problem. We’ll see how much the Eagles’ brass tries to control this staff.

Harris is a former NFL safety and was a 6th-round pick back in 2005 and played eight seasons in the NFL for the Bears, Panthers, Lions and Jaguars. Harris was a second-team All-Pro in 2010 with the Bears. He was a four-year starter at Louisiana-Monroe before getting drafted.
