Eagles sign former college QB to futures deal as a tight end

The Eagles on Thursday signed another project at the tight end position.

This time, they signed former Buffalo quarterback Tyree Jackson to a futures deal and are converting him to a tight end.

The Eagles also have Hakeem Butler, who is converting from a receiver to tight end, on their roster. So now they have two project tight ends for the coaching staff to work with.

Jackson is an interesting signing. At 6-7, 250 pounds, he certainly has the body build to become a tight end in the NFL. It’ll be fun to see him at training camp in the summer. The Eagles worked him out in December.

It’s not exactly common to see a college quarterback to end up being an NFL tight end, there’s one big example: Logan Thomas, who has a very similar build. Thomas played college ball at Virginia Tech and after floundering for a few years trying to make it in the NFL, he switched to tight end. This past season, Thomas had a breakout year for Washington, catching 72 passes for 670 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Jackson, 23, went to college at Buffalo and then signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He spent that training camp with the Bills but was waived at final cuts.

He then was drafted in the XFL Draft and played for the DC Defenders as a backup behind Cardale Jones.

During his time at Buffalo, Jackson completed 56% of his passes for just under 7,000 yards with 49 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in three seasons. He also rushed for 757 yards and 16 touchdowns as a dual threat option.
