Updating Eagles' chances at winning NFC East and landing top-5 draft pick

Share

Had the Eagles pulled off an upset over the Cardinals, they would’ve controlled their own destiny to get into the playoffs. That’s no longer the case.

The Eagles’ aren’t dead in the NFC East race, but now they’re gonna need some help.

Here are the updated standings in the division:

Washington: 6-8

Giants: 5-9

Cowboys: 5-9

Eagles: 4-9-1

In order for the Eagles to make it into the playoffs, they will need to win their remaining two games against the Cowboys and Washington to get to a 6-9-1 record and then they’ll also need the following to happen …

  • Washington will have to lose its final two games at home against Carolina and on the road against the Eagles in Week 17.

Washington plays at 1 p.m. next week, so the Eagles will know what they have to play for by their 4:25 p.m. kickoff.

  • The Giants will need to lose at least one of their remaining two games to the Ravens or Cowboys.
  • The Cowboys need to lose at least one of their last two games, which doubles up because the Eagles will have to beat them next week to still have a chance.

Here are the updated chances to win the division, per FiveThirtyEight:

Washington: 76%

Giants: 10%

Eagles: 9%

Cowboys: 5%

If Washington loses next week and the Eagles win, the Eagles’ chances skyrocket to 50%.

Of course, it’s fair to even wonder if winning the division is good for the Eagles. After all, the best draft pick they could get if they win the division in 19th and they are in line for a top-10 pick with two games left.

Coming into the weekend, the Eagles were set to pick at No. 9 but after the loss, they’re now at No. 7, via Tankathon.

There’s a decent chance the Eagles could get up to as fourth in draft order by the end of the season. There are right now three teams ahead of them with 4-10 records:

Panthers: @WAS (6-8), vs. NOR (10-4)

Falcons: @KC (13-1), @ TAM (9-5)

Houston (Miami): vs. CIN (2-10-1), vs. TEN (10-4)
