Report: Eagles restructure Zach Ertz's deal to save cap space

Howie Roseman is nothing if not crafty.

Up against it in terms of salary cap space this offseason, Eagles de facto GM and salary cap wizard Howie Roseman has finagled a little extra space.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Eagles have turned $3.225 million of Zach Ertz's base salary this season into a roster bonus, which will save $2.58 million in much-needed cap space.

Ertz was set to have a $4 million base salary in 2017 with a cap hit of $5.6 million. This move will essentially just spread out the cap hit over a longer period of time. For Ertz, it just means he's getting his money now.

Moves like this are why Roseman looked generally care-free when asked Friday about what seemed to be an extremely tough cap situation.

"Yeah, you know, I think from our perspective, we're going to have to look at things as they come through. Obviously, as the draft comes too, things are going to change. We're going through all that now," Roseman said on Friday when asked if corresponding moves were pending.

"I think that as we look past this moment, we're going to be OK. But it is a unique situation that we've had. And I think as you look out at the league, people have had it. We're looking at that. I'm trying to not be too specific because I don't want to get into strategy here."

It looks like we've now learned one of the strategic moves. There are probably more to come.
